Kej Dark Sky Weekend 2018

August 17–19

Join Parks Canada and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and learn more about the stars, planets, constellations, and galaxies in the night sky!

In order to view objects like galaxies, planets, the Milky Way, star clusters and other sky wonders, it takes 30 minutes for your eyes to adapt to the dark. Please use a red light when joining us at the Sky Circle, so we can all enjoy the fall sky in its infinite beauty.

Friday, August 17

2pm to 4pm at the Visitor Centre: Meet Keji staff and RASC amateur astronomers to find out about the activities planned for the weekend. See sunspots and prominences with safely filtered telescopes!

4pm at the Sky Circle in Jeremy’s Bay Campground (P1): “Walk the Solar System” family program with Paul Heath of RASC. Learn about planets in our solar system!

9pm to Midnight at the Sky Circle in Jeremy’s Bay Campground (P1): Join the astronomers from RASC and learn and see the Moon and the planets Jupiter, Saturn and Mars through telescopes. When it is dark, enjoy a guided tour of the sky. Limited parking! Please walk!

9:30pm-11pm at Jakes Landing: Mersey Lantern Flotilla. Brighten up your night with this relaxing lantern-lit flotilla under dark skies. Bring your own canoe or kayak or rent one from Whynot Adventure. The lanterns will be provided. If renting, please rent from Whynot Adventure before 8:30pm.

Saturday, August 18

1pm-4pm at the Merrymakedge canteen (P4): Astronomy Drop-in! Ask-an-astronomer, learn to use a StarFinder and how to photograph nightscapes, telescope clinic (bring in your own telescopes for tips), and solar viewing!

8:00 pm at the Visitor Center: Keynote presentation by amateur astronomer Kathryn Gray of Saint Mary’s University: “How I Discovered a Supernova”. A 6” reflector telescope (courtesy of Atlantic Photo Supply) and astronomy books by John A. Read will be yours to win! Enter by attending the presentation, the prizes will be drawn at the end. Limited parking! Please Walk!

10pm at the Sky Circle in Jeremy’s Bay Campground (P1): Your Guides to the Galaxy: Delve into distant celestial bodies and learn about planets, stars, constellations, distant galaxies and more! This will be followed by public observing with RASC telescopes, weather permitting. Limited Parking! Please walk!

Sunday, August 19

9 pm at Merrymakedege Beach (P4): Drop-in public observing with RASC telescopes weather permitting. Join the astronomers from RASC to observe the Moon and the planets Jupiter, Saturn and Mars through telescopes. When it is dark, enjoy a guided tour of the sky. Please inquire at the Visitor Centre anytime after 12pm on the day of to confirm if the activity will happen.
